ad astra per aspera “catapult calypso” album packaging

a close relationship with this progressive indie-rock band allowed for a highly collaborative process that led to a visual language unique to each member. the logic of the design and composition is based on band member’s responses to questions about their relative density, volume, and presence in most songs. the band member’s self-perceptions about those attributes were then mapped to design criteria such as visual density, scale, and repetition, resulting in a visual representation of the band’s sound. members were also asked to choose colors from a predetermined palette and photograph details of their instruments which were used in the final collages. the resulting design was then applied to a cd-release poster and 12” record. converting 4-color process work to three colors for the poster and record while maintaining visual consistency proved a special challenge.
